Interdependence of International Tourism Demand and Volatility in Leading ASEAN Destinations

International and domestic tourism are leading economic activities in the world today. Tourism has been known to generate goods and services directly and indirectly, attract foreign currency, stimulate employment, and provide opportunities for investment. It has also been recognized as an important means for achieving economic development. Substantial research has been conducted to evaluate the role of international tourism, and its associated volatility, within and across various economies. This paper applies several recently developed models of multivariate conditional volatility to investigate the interdependence of international tourism demand, as measured by international tourist arrivals, and its associated volatility in the four leading destinations in ASEAN, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. Each of these countries has attractive tourism characteristics, such as significant cultural and natural resources. Shocks to international tourism demand volatility could affect, positively or negatively, the volatility in tourism demand of neighbouring countries. The empirical results should encourage regional co-operation in tourism development among ASEAN member countries, and also mobilize international and regional organizations to provide appropriate policy actions.

The Role of the Calcium Sensing Receptor in Regulating Intracellular Calcium Handling in Human Epidermal Keratinocytes

Calcium is critical for controlling the balance of proliferation and differentiation in epidermal keratinocytes. We previously reported that the calcium sensing receptor (CaR) is required for mediating Ca2+ signaling and extracellular Ca2+ (Ca2+o)-induced differentiation. In this study, we investigated the mechanism by which CaR regulates intracellular Ca2+ (Ca2+i) and its role in differentiation. Membrane fractionation, fluorescence immunolocalization, and co-immunoprecipitation studies were performed to assess potential interactions between CaR and other regulators of Ca2+ stores and channels. We found that the glycosylated form of CaR forms a complex with phospholipase C γ1, IP3 receptor (IP3R), and the Golgi Ca2+-ATPase, secretory pathway Ca2+-ATPase 1, in the trans-Golgi. Inactivation of the endogenous CaR gene by adenoviral expression of a CaR antisense cDNA inhibited Ca2+i response to Ca2+o, decreased Ca2+i stores, decreased Ca2+o-induced differentiation, but augmented store-operated channel activity and Ca2+ uptake by intracellular organelles. Our results indicate that CaR regulates keratinocyte differentiation in part by modulating Ca2+i stores via interactions with Ca2+ pumps and channels that regulate those stores

The Development of Audit Detection Risk Assessment System: Using the Fuzzy Theory and Audit Risk Model

The result of audit designation is significantly influenced by the audit evidence collected when planning the audit and the degree of detection risk is further depends on the amount of audit evidence. Therefore, when the assessment factors of detection risk are more objective and correct, audit costs and the risk of audit failure can be reduced. Thus, the aim of this paper is to design an audit detection risk assessment system that could more precisely assess detection risk, comparing with the traditional determination method of detection risk in order to increase the audit quality and reduce the possibility of audit failure. First, the grounded theory is used to reorganize 53 factors affecting detection risk mentioned in literatures and then employed the Delphi method to screen the 43 critical risk factors agreed upon by empirical audit experts. In addition, using the fuzzy theory and audit risk model to calculate the degree of detection risk allow the audit staff to further determine the amount of audit evidence collected and set up initial audit strategies and construct the audit detection risk assessment system. Finally, we considered a case study to evaluate the system in terms of its feasibility and validity

Service Alliance in Competition: A Game Theory Perspective

This research focuses on services based on alliance and devises a novel concept called service alliance. Service alliance uses service as the unit that companies can exchange, furnish, and share services in the alliance. Service alliance emphasizes on the representation and exchange for value of single service from an individual company. This research utilizes game theory to discuss the best action of service alliance in competition. We use airline industry as the example and expect to contribute to any service industry. The results show that four strategies are similar to the process from competition to cooperation. The best case is that the members in the alliance co-fund a new service team to serve all members. We hope the proposed concept can be applied to all service industry and create a new operation model for alliance

Intraluminal duodenal diverticulum in a child concomitant with an entrapped coin and a duodenal polyp

SummaryIntraluminal duodenal diverticulum (IDD) is a rare congenital anomaly. We present the report of an 8-year-old girl who had an entrapped coin in an IDD for 3 years that was associated with recurrent pancreatitis. Besides, a duodenoduodenal intussusception was found during the course of investigation and it seemed that a concomitant duodenal polyp contributed to the development of the intussusception. In view of the rarity of each of the aforementioned situations and the improbability of these conditions occurring together, this unusual and possibly unique case is therefore reported here

Staphylococcal Cassette Chromosome mec in MRSA, Taiwan

To determine the predominant staphylococcal cassette chromosome (SCC) mec element in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, we typed 190 isolates from a hospital in Taiwan. We found a shift from type IV to type III SCCmec element during 1992–2003, perhaps caused by selective pressure from indiscriminate use of antimicrobial drugs
